Pushing Dexterity and Safety for In-Hand Object Pose Reaching That Works Remarkably Well

Ian Chuang, Hiya Shah, Vamsi Chilamkur, Iman Soltani et al.

Abstract摘要

Dexterous manipulation with multi-fingered hands is the next frontier of robotics, yet learned hand skills remain limited to simple grasps or basic repeated motions, such as rotating an object. As robots attempt more demanding in-hand maneuvers, safety, such as not dropping the object, becomes critical, yet it is rarely measured. We study in-hand object pose reaching, a task that demands diverse and difficult grasps: moving an object to almost any position and orientation within reach of the fingers, at any wrist orientation, through long sequences of consecutive goals. We present a recipe …

A fully articulated humanoid dexterous hand with human-level joint structure enabled by linkage-based actuation

Jihao Li, Jianguo Wang, Haotian Guo, Yanzhe Wang et al.

Abstract摘要

Humanoid dexterous hands are a core component of embodied intelligence, enabling robots to translate high-level intent into rich and adaptive physical interaction. However, existing designs remain constrained by a persistent trade-off among anthropomorphic kinematic complexity, mechanical robustness, load capacity and control simplicity, limiting dexterous manipulation in unstructured environments. Here we present Torch-Hand, a fully articulated humanoid dexterous hand that replicates the joint structure and motion hierarchy of the human hand with 21 degrees of freedom (DOF), comprising a …

CARD: Contact-Anchored Retargeting for Dexterous Manipulation

Cunxi Dai, Botao He, Francois R Hogan, Wei Pan et al.

Abstract摘要

Humans are dexterous, but traditional data collection paradigms such as teleoperation, kinesthetic teaching, and wearable exoskeletons force humans to act through the robot embodiment, bottlenecking their dexterity. Retargeting can avoid this. However, existing methods purely translate kinematics and ignore the real-world contact dynamics essential for task success. We present CARD: Contact-Anchored Retargeting for Dexterous Manipulation, a simulator and object-free framework that retargets human demonstrations to robot actions by explicitly preserving contact force targets. CARD unifies …

DEX-PHD: A Dexterous Portable Handheld Device for Multimodal Data Collection

Jooyoung Hong, Noboru Myers, Obin Kwon, Yixian Yang et al.

Abstract摘要

Existing manipulation data collection methods typically offer either accurate robot-state acquisition through kinematic-chain-based teleoperation or convenient, portable operation through vision-based approaches. We present DEX-PHD, a portable handheld device that combines these advantages for dexterous manipulation by integrating a dexterous robot hand, continuous per-finger control, and multimodal logging. The system records proprioceptive information, fingertip contact data, and wrist-camera video, while the operator directly controls the robot hand through joint-level mapping. Its …

The Language of Deformation: Semantic Failure Analysis as a Prerequisite for Dexterous Manipulation of Deformable Objects

Ignacio Cuiral-Zueco, David Hardman, Michele Pierallini, Erfan Shahriari

Abstract摘要

Dexterous manipulation of rigid objects has reached a level of maturity where grasp stability, control, and planning strategies are successfully applied in industry and logistics. In contrast, manipulating deformable objects (cables, plastic pieces, cloth) remains far more challenging, as rigid-object methods do not account for their additional complexity. This paper identifies semantic failure analysis as a key step toward mature deformable-object manipulation and supports this claim with proof-of-concept experiments. Unlike rigid-object manipulation, where goals are well-defined in terms of …

Scaling Dexterous Manipulation via Action Representation Pretraining

Yanjinghao Xu, Jiexin Zhang, Huan Zhao, Jianjia Mo et al.

Abstract摘要

Large-scale vision, language, and video pretraining has substantially improved the perception and generalization capabilities of robotic manipulation models, but action generation for complex dexterous manipulation remains constrained by the scarcity of robot demonstrations. Limited robot demonstrations must be used to learn both action representations and task-conditioned action distributions, making it difficult to adequately learn action representations and, in turn, limiting the ability of downstream generative models to generate complex dexterous actions. To address this limitation, we …

AdaDexTrack: Dynamic Modulation for Adaptive and Generalizable Dexterous Manipulation Tracking

Jianibieke Adalibieke, Qianwei Han, Xueyi Liu, Yuzhe Qin et al.

Abstract摘要

Language is a natural way to command robots, but converting a single instruction into a long-horizon, contact-rich hand-object interaction remains challenging: synthesized references are noisy, human-to-robot retargeting introduces embodiment bias, and fixed-reference tracking lets small errors snowball. We address this with AdaDexTrack, a modulator-in-the-loop framework for language-conditioned manipulation tracking. A distilled generalist tracker serves as the skill carrier, while a tightly aligned modulator performs three feedback corrections: reference modulation (continual adjustment of …

RBGA: Residual-Budget Guide Arbitration for Offline-to-Online Safe Reinforcement Learning in Dexterous Manipulation

Zongyou Yu, Ao Zhou, Xiongbo Shi, Jiayi Guan et al.

Abstract摘要

Dexterous manipulation requires robots to leverage existing datasets for rapid skill acquisition while maintaining safety during real-world deployment to prevent damage to the robot or its surroundings. Offline-to-online safe reinforcement learning (O2O safe RL) provides a promising solution for this problem by leveraging prior experience for online improvement under safety constraints, thereby mitigating the sample inefficiency and exploration risk of learning safe policies from scratch. However, existing O2O safe RL approaches do not explicitly account for the safety budget already consumed …

Learning Dexterous Manipulation: Hands, Simulators, Training, and Evaluation

Luai Abuelsamen

Abstract摘要

A dexterous hand can change an object's pose without setting it down. This survey covers 113 learning-based methods that attempt it, the hands they run on, the simulators they train in, and how they report results. The field has largely converged on one recipe: reinforcement learning on privileged state in a GPU simulator, distilled into a vision-only student for transfer to hardware. Almost half the corpus trains that way, nearly all of it in one simulator, whose own successors are barely used. A second and faster-growing branch learns from teleoperated demonstration instead, through …

MDPO: Multi-constraint Dexterous Policy Optimization with Reinforcement Learning

Ao Zhou, Zongyou Yu, Ke Wu, Tao Xu et al.

Abstract摘要

Dexterous manipulation requires high-dimensional control policies to accomplish complex contact-rich tasks while simultaneously satisfying multiple safety requirements, such as joint limits, unsafe finger configurations, arm collisions, and unstable object interactions. Constrained reinforcement learning (RL) provides a principled framework for incorporating these requirements into dexterous manipulation policy learning. However, existing constrained RL methods for dexterous manipulation primarily focus on cumulative cost constraints and struggle to simultaneously handle multiple …

ORBIT: A Modular Multi-finger Robotic Hand Platform with Rotational Finger Reconfiguration

Benito Ribadeneira, Siqi Shang, Lillian Chin

Abstract摘要

Despite the popularity of multi-fingered robotic hands for dexterous manipulation, there is no systematic platform to compare different hand morphologies against one another. We present ORBIT (Orbital Reconfigurable Base-actuated Integrated Theta-motion Hand), a modular platform designed to enable principled exploration of multi-fingered hand morphology. The core contribution of ORBIT is a rotating knuckle mechanism, where independent fingers travel around a cylindrical palm via a belt drive. This enables ORBIT to perform quick recon- figuration (< 1 s) of finger layout without hand …

DexPort: A Hand-Held Skill Interface for Dexterous Hand Data Collection

Amber Xie, Jiawei Fu, Xiaofeng Guo, Carmelo Sferrazza et al.

Abstract摘要

Collecting high-quality demonstrations remains a central bottleneck for learning dexterous manipulation. Teleoperation records executable robot actions, but it requires a complete robot setup and places the burden of coordinating many finger joints on the operator. Human demonstrations are easier to collect, but their motions must be estimated and retargeted to the robot, and they do not directly provide robot actions. In this paper, we introduce DexPort, a portable data-collection interface for high-DoF robot hands. It uses the same hand hardware for collection and deployment, avoiding a …

IORA: Irregular Object Immobilization under Restricted Actuation

Sang-Hun Han, Changyeon Won, JunGyu Lee, Min-Gyu Park et al.

Abstract摘要

Stable grasping under task-specific disturbances is important for robotic manipulation. However, most dexterous grasp synthesis methods are developed for highly actuated hands in free space, and low-DoF hands may not be able to realize the contact topologies required by these grasps. Meanwhile, support surfaces can provide useful contact forces, but are often treated only as geometric constraints. We present a support-aware grasp synthesis framework for object immobilization with low-DoF coupled hands. Given irregular object geometry, our method represents both hand and object local surface …

DeXplicit: Making Physical State Explicit in Dexterous Manipulation World Models

Adam Lee, Mutian Xu, Yukang Cao, Shulin Tian et al.

Abstract摘要

Before acting on an object, a robot needs to anticipate how its hand motion will change the physical world and what the resulting scene will look like. Existing approaches typically entangle action-conditioned dynamics, camera motion, and visual synthesis within a video generation model, or represent dynamics as point trajectories without explicit object structure. We introduce DeXplicit, a dexterous manipulation world model that instead predicts how the world evolves explicitly in metric 3D before rendering its visual consequences. Given an initial scene and a future hand trajectory, a …

Tactile-Based Robotic Manipulation: From Mechanics-Driven to Data-Driven Perspectives

Jingyi Xiang, Yixuan Wang, Wenzhen Yuan

Abstract摘要

Tactile sensing provides robots with direct access to physical interactions at the contact interface, making it a critical modality for robust and dexterous manipulation. Over the past several decades, tactile-based manipulation research has evolved from mechanics-driven approaches, which explicitly interpret tactile signals through contact mechanics and task-specific reasoning, to data-driven approaches that learn tactile representations and manipulation policies directly from data. This paper reviews the development of tactile-based manipulation from these two complementary perspectives. We …

DONIC: Generalist Dexterous Bimanual Tracking Control from Human Demonstrations

Mingze Sun, Ziang Cao, Yuan Fei, Qiankuan Tao et al.

Abstract摘要

Despite recent progress in dexterous reference tracking, existing models focus primarily on single-hand manipulation and a limited range of interactions, leaving the bimanual dexterous behaviors common in real life unaddressed. The scarcity of contact-rich bimanual manipulation data and the increased complexity of coordinating contacts make developing a generalist bimanual tracker particularly challenging. Therefore, we present 1) DONIC, the first generalist bimanual tracker jointly trained across operation categories and human-motion sources, together with 2) BiHOI, a multi-view dataset of …

PHD-Hand: A Printable Humanoid Dexterous Hand with Linkage-Driven 3-DOA Digits

Abstract摘要

Currently, dexterous humanoid robot hands are widely considered the final hardware bottleneck that hampers generalist robots from physically assisting people at home and work. As conventional tendon-driven designs suffer from high cost, demanding maintenance, poor reliability, and short durability, alternative linkage-driven designs have increasingly gained attention. Despite their potential to avoid the weaknesses of tendon-driven hands, integrating multiple degrees of actuation (DOA) in a single digit with linkage drivetrains is a challenge for design and fabrication. COWBOY: A Scalable Sim-to-Real Framework for Learning Contextual Whole-Body Manipulation

To address this, we present COWBOY, a scalable sim-to-real framework for learning such contextual whole-body manipulation. On whole-body dexterous grasping, COWBOY transfers zero-shot to hundreds of objects and diverse in-the-wild scenes, spanning cluttered tabletops, shelves, drawers, and other unstructured settings. Learning Adaptable Dexterous Skills via Hybrid Dexterous Mimicking

Abstract摘要

Dexterous multi-finger hands hold promise to unlock diverse skills like functional grasps, in-hand reorientation, and dynamic handover that the human-designed world assumes, yet existing learning recipes force a trade-off. Goal-reaching reinforcement learning generalizes to arbitrary object poses but, lacking any human prior, converges to unnatural and unreliable finger strategies; motion tracking reproduces human-like behavior from a single clip but cannot deviate from it. Learning Tactile-Aware Hand Representations from Human Hand-Object Interaction Data

Yeonguk Yu, Jaehong Kim, Byungok Han

Abstract摘要

Tactile representation learning for dexterous manipulation often requires substantial robot-side data collection, limiting its scalability across different hands and sensors. We explore whether large-scale human hand-object interaction (HOI) data can provide a useful prior for robotic tactile learning. To this end, we propose HuTact, a framework that pretrains tactile-aware hand representations from human HOI data without requiring real tactile signals during pretraining. HuTact transfers the interaction structure learned from human hand motions to robotic tactile observations and can be …

What Novice Operators See Changes What the Policy Learns: A User Study of Keypoint Hand Visual Representation for Teleoperated Demonstration

Amane Yamaguchi, Shohei Kamiguchi, Masashi Hamaya, Shigeo Yoshida et al.

Abstract摘要

Imitation learning increasingly relies on novice operators, whose demonstrations fall short of experts' in number and inter-trial consistency. Operators act on what they are shown, yet how the rendering of the robot affects their demonstrations, and the policies trained on them, has not been examined. We study this question with PointHand, a teleoperation interface that renders a multi-fingered robot hand as sparse keypoints at its fingertips and joints, the same keypoints a policy can observe. In a simulated mug-in-box task, 18 novices and 4 experts collected 2,200 trials under three …

EmbodyHOI: Embodiment-Aware Generation of Hand-Object Interactions for Humanoid Dexterous Manipulation

Chaitanya Chawla, Kartik Sharma, Ananya Bal, Laszlo A. Jeni et al.

Abstract摘要

Humanoid dexterous manipulation needs reference motions that are both semantically rich and kinematically feasible for the target robot. Text-conditioned hand-object interaction (HOI) generators supply diverse, language-specified demonstrations, but they synthesize motion in human (MANO) space. The embodiment gap is therefore deferred to post-hoc retargeting, where trajectories deployed on the robot can fail to maintain contact with objects and also degrade policy learning. Our key idea is that robot reachability should constrain the interaction trajectories while they are being generated. We …

DexOAK: Object-Aware Kinematic Retargeting

Federica Spinola, Robert Katzschmann, Cordelia Schmid

Abstract摘要

We introduce DexOAK, a learning-based object-aware kinematic retargeting framework for generating contact-consistent robot hand references from human motion-capture data. DexOAK first minimizes an interaction-graph Laplacian objective over a joint hand-object graph, so the robot reproduces the demonstrated object-relative interaction geometry rather than the human hand pose alone. These per-frame solutions form seed retargeted references, from which a feed-forward network conditioned on human keypoints and object point clouds learns the retargeting function. Object-aware finetuning then …

Continuous in-hand rotation requires coordinated contact maintenance and renewal, linking manipulation performance to both hand geometry and tactile feedback. We investigate these relationships through rotational progress, finger participation, and fingertip loading on two versions of the low-cost LEAP Hand with anthropomorphic and symmetric finger arrangements. Both hands are integrated with TacTip vision-based tactile sensors and use a shared reinforcement learning framework. PhantomTac: Hijacking Robotic Tactile Systems with Deploy-and-forget Tags

Binbin Zhang, Yifeng Zhang, Xiaomeng Chen, Dongyao Chen

Abstract摘要

Tactile perception is crucial for precise robotic manipulation, providing an important foundation for dexterous, closed-loop force control. Among various tactile sensing techniques, magnetic tactile sensors stand out thanks to their fine-grained, three-dimensional force perception capability and strong robustness against visual occlusion. In this study, we discover a physical loophole called PhantomTac in magnetic tactile sensors. The attacker can alter the magnetic field, thus spoofing the force interpreted by magnetic tactile sensors. The attacker can stealthily deploy such an attack by …

Adaptive Bendpoint Formation in Octopus-Inspired Soft Continuum Arms

Jessica Gumowski, Julian Finn, Krishna Manaswi Digumarti, David Howard

Abstract摘要

Octopuses exhibit a powerful form of embodied intelligence from a highly adaptable soft body. One key mechanism is the ability to instantiate bending points at any location along the arm, which enables performant and dexterous behaviours. Taking inspiration from the octopus for its dexterity, this study focuses on changing the curvature of a tendon-actuated arm by adaptively changing the anchoring end-point along the arm. An array of inflatable shells is integrated into the arm, where inflating a shell causes an increase in friction at the location, jamming the tendon and creating a temporary …

BiDex-100: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Bimanual Dexterous Manipulation Across 100+ Simulation Tasks

Yong Wang, Kecheng Zheng, Xing Zhu, Chao Xu et al.

Abstract摘要

Bimanual manipulation with dexterous hands has attracted growing attention in research on robotic action models. However, few studies have developed benchmarks specifically tailored for dexterous manipulation, leaving the dexterous manipulation capabilities of existing models insufficiently characterized. In this paper, we present BiDex-100, a simulation benchmark for bimanual dexterous manipulation that combines broad task coverage, multi-dimensional evaluation, and high-DoF hand embodiments. Concretely, the benchmark comprises 106 tasks organized along five capability axes: generalization, …

T(R,O) Grasp++: Cross-Embodiment Dexterous Grasping in Cluttered Environments at Scale

Xin Fei, Zhixuan Xu, Huaicong Fang, Fangjun Chen et al.

Abstract摘要

Dexterous grasping in cluttered scenes remains a central challenge in robotic manipulation, as it requires high-dimensional hand coordination under complex object-environment constraints. To address this problem, we introduce one of the largest simulation benchmarks to date, comprising around 0.5B grasp annotations across eight dexterous hands and approximately 50K objects. Furthermore, we propose T(R,O) Grasp++, a scalable diffusion-based framework for cross-embodiment dexterous grasp synthesis in cluttered environments. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model significantly …

Gen2Dex: Learning Dexterous Manipulation from Simulation-Initialized Generated Video Demonstrations

Xiaowen Qiu, Yian Wang, Haoxiang You, Chuang Gan

Abstract摘要

Human video demonstrations provide rich manipulation strategies for dexterous manipulation learning. We study a setting in which a fully specified simulated scene is used to generate videos that specify the demonstrated manipulation behavior. This setup provides access to scene information such as object geometry, articulation, and camera parameters, while allowing direct control over task and scene configuration. However, generated videos may contain geometric distortions, inaccurate contacts, and other physical inconsistencies, making the recovered motion difficult to execute directly on a …

MoDex: Towards Universal Multi-Object Dexterous Grasping

Jing Xiong, Jiale Xie, Haoqi Yuan, Chaoyi Xu et al.

Abstract摘要

Multi-object grasping is a fundamental yet challenging problem, constrained by data collection costs, varying spatial layouts, and the need for broad generalization. To address these challenges, we propose MoDex, a data-efficient framework that provides the first unified solution for universal multi-object dexterous grasping across diverse spatial layouts. MoDex accomplishes this by formulating the task as a single-step decision problem of learning residual corrections to a reference trajectory, and introducing a spatially adaptive dual-strategy that performs single-shot grasping for proximal …

Embodiment-Aware Planning for Heterogeneous Bimanual Manipulation

Sukhvansh Jain, Anurag Maurya, Shivam Vats, Narendra Kumar Dhar et al.

Abstract摘要

Many manipulation tasks that are effortless for dexterous human hands remain challenging for robotic systems equipped with simple, task-specialized grippers. Industrial platforms commonly rely on end-effectors such as suction cups or parallel-jaw grippers, yet no single mode can reliably satisfy the diverse constraints encountered across different phases of complex manipulation tasks, including pickup, reorientation, insertion, and constrained placement. In this work, we investigate whether complementary simple grippers within a heterogeneous bimanual setup can collectively realize tasks that …

No Eyes, No Problem: What Does Touch Contribute to Blind Baoding Ball Manipulation?

Ayush Deshmukh, Nalin Agarwal, Elle Miller, Sethu Vijayakumar

Abstract摘要

Humans manipulate objects within their hands through touch alone with remarkable ease, but for robots, achieving sustained real-world manipulation without vision remains an open challenge. Although reinforcement learning (RL) can generate sophisticated blind manipulation policies in simulation, transferring them to a real dexterous hand remains hindered by continuously changing contacts, motion-induced tactile information drift, and the gap between simulated and physical dynamics. We study this problem through Baoding ball rotation on the Shadow Dexterous Hand Lite, using only proprioception …

Ego2Contact: Predicting Touch from Egocentric Human Video for Contact-Rich Robot Manipulation

Qianqian Yang, Dayou Li, Bangya Liu, Zihao Zhu et al.

Abstract摘要

Contact locations and interaction forces are critical for contact-rich robot manipulation but are often ambiguous from vision alone. Measuring them on robots requires specialized tactile hardware and platform-specific data collection, which keeps robot tactile data scarce. Human egocentric video is far easier to scale but lacks touch. Recent predictors trained on egocentric recordings paired with tactile-glove measurements can predict this missing signal from video alone. These predictors, however, remain confined to human hands, which differ from robot hands in appearance and tactile layout. …

Has GPT-6-Astra Achieved Embodied Intelligence?

SenseNova, Joint Research Team, :, Zhongang Cai et al.

Abstract摘要

GPT-6-Astra demonstrates a level of competence in robotic manipulation and navigation that challenges the conventional paradigm of building specialized models for individual tasks and embodiments. In this report, we ask not only how capable GPT-6-Astra is, but what its capabilities imply for the field. First, we probe the limits of standalone GPT-6-Astra. We conduct a large-scale evaluation across 12 representative benchmarks spanning tabletop manipulation, humanoids, mobile platforms, and dexterous hands. Under a unified protocol that allows in-context learning (ICL) from training-set …

Perceive, Predict, and Plan: a Unified World Action Model for Egocentric Dexterous Manipulation

Zirui Wu, Chen Guo, Tianjian Jiang, Zeren Jiang et al.

Abstract摘要

We introduce P$^{3}$-WAM, a unified world action model for egocentric dexterous manipulation that learns 3D perception, action-conditioned prediction, and goal-directed planning through three complementary modes: Perceive, which reconstructs articulated hand motion and camera trajectories from video; Predict, which generates visual futures under prescribed actions; and Plan, which jointly generates action trajectories and their anticipated visual consequences conditioned on an initial image, a language instruction, and an optional visual goal. Our model integrates a compact, structured 3D …

Spark-0: Scaling Spatially Aligned Tactile Pretraining for Robot Dexterous Manipulation

Tianxing Chen, Wenwei Lin, Chuqiao Lyu, Peicheng Xiang et al.

Abstract摘要

Generalist robot policies benefit from large-scale visual pretraining but often struggle with contact-rich dexterous manipulation, where force, compliance, and incipient slip are hard to observe from images. We present Spark-0, a spatially aligned vision-tactile-language-action (VTLA) model that uses touch in two complementary ways. During pretraining, image-space contact maps derived from tactile gloves, together with features from a frozen 3D geometry teacher, supervise the visual tokens; these objectives are removed at inference. In parallel, a tactile pathway encodes regional force …

Dexterity from Supervised Play

Botao He, Yiming Dou, Yiannis Aloimonos, Jitendra Malik et al.

Abstract摘要

How can robots autonomously collect the contact-rich experience needed to learn dexterous manipulation? We present DSP: Dexterity from supervised play, a framework in which a robot learns a play policy from minutes of human play through behavior cloning, then deploys it autonomously to collect hours of interaction data to train a world model. During inference, the same play policy then guides model-predictive control (MPC) by proposing candidate action sequences for evaluation under the learned world model. To accelerate inference, we also introduce a method for distilling a closed-loop, …

Whole-Body Dexterity

Conor Mc Gartoll, An Dang, Pranay Thangeda, Arjun Gupta et al.

Abstract摘要

Current humanoid dexterous manipulation remains largely confined to end-effectors and simple grasps, falling short of humans' ability to engage the entire body by bracing and sliding bulky objects against the arms and torso. We introduce Whole-Body Dexterity (WBD), a general framework that uses the robot's body and appendages as contact surfaces to grasp and manipulate objects. Our sim-to-real pipeline first generates a dataset of feasible whole-body grasps, then trains reinforcement-learning experts on a general any-to-any repositioning objective by sampling initial and goal grasps from the …
